Our research centre participates in the development of new materials for construction, for different applications as varied as interior or exterior thermal insulation of buildings, decoration and interior design, exterior wall and floor coating mortars or cast iron pipes.
We contribute to enhancing surroundings by developing new materials for comfort, aesthetics, air quality, or by improving colours and optical properties on various supports such as glass, fibreglass, exterior wall and floor coating mortars. Our research is based on many materials and in particular polymers, cement material and plaster.
Our team works on the concept of new and performing products, which are both lighter, more mechanically resistant and more environmentally-friendly by using bio-sourced or recycled materials and by optimising industrial processes.

Saint-Gobain Recherche and industrial mortars
Saint-Gobain Recherche's multidisciplinary teams, in partnership with SG Weber, are involved in developing innovative solutions for ready-mixed mortars.
SG Weber markets industrial mortar solutions which are essential materials in the construction field. Regularly used and simple in appearance, they are in actual fact complex, technical products.
Using raw materials such as sand, cements and additives, a very wide range of industrial mortars are produced for various applications: tile adhesives, exterior wall coatings, screeds (levelling of floors), decorative floors, exterior insulation solutions, concrete repairs...
Quality and durability are ensured not only through control of the basic raw materials but also by the formulation of these materials with additives that confer on them unique properties.
In order to optimise their characteristics, the Saint-Gobain Recherche teams work on:

With Saint-Gobain Recherche since January 2010, Souryan joined the industrial mortars research department as a research technician. Since then he has worked on various projects.
"With a single material, we have to explore various aspects," Souryan stresses.
"Currently, I am mainly working on a study to improve the thermal performance of buildings. This involves mixing cements with additives to give them the desired thermal properties. It is a research project that aims to develop a new innovative solution. We face several constraints: ensuring that the new mortar will remain on the wall once applied, that the new formulation actually provides improved thermal properties and that it manages to harden according to the constraints of the site applicators. Each aspect has an impact on the other two."
At the same time, Souryan is also involved in a study on the effect of certain components, especially polymers, on the hardening of the product, depending on the climatic conditions they undergo. "For this study, we are using knowledge the suppliers have of the material to develop our own project. There is also a real cross-over between the departments."
Finally, he has also studied the issues surrounding the structure of the hydrated binder. "This diversity of projects is extremely rewarding. At Saint-Gobain Recherche, each technician works on several research studies. This enables us to diversify our knowledge of the materials and then use this knowledge in the various studies we are involved in."
